Toronto Bicycling Network is Toronto's largest recreational cycling club, rated the city’s #1 cycling club by BlogTO andReaders Choice. TBN offers a wide variety of rides throughout the week and on weekends, catering to all levels of riders, as well as affordable trips outside Toronto and a wide range of winter activities.

Gearing up for Cyclon 2024

TBN cycling season is just around the corner and the Cyclon committee is hard at work planning for Cyclon 2024, which this year will be held Aug. 2-5 at Trent University in Peterborough. Trent has a beautiful campus (pictured below) situated on the lovely Otonabee River. Enjoy rides each day for all classifications, a Friday night reception, hosted Saturday night dinners and the Sunday night banquet and dance. Cyclon registration will open in mid-April. Stay tuned for more info.

Join us for the TBN Pub Quiz series

The TBN Pub Quiz series is set for the third or fourth Thursday of each month at one of Toronto’s best and most interesting venues, the Prenup Pub. Participants will work together in teams of four of five to answer trivia questions in four categories to be chosen by the teams before the quiz begins. Virtually any category is possible – even cycling! There will be prizes for the winning team.

In other news, the club's inaugural Spring Fling, an annual party to open the cycling season, is scheduled for May 4. The evening will feature a buffet-style Middle-Eastern dinner and dancing to live music by The Junctioneers, one of the best cover bands in Toronto.

For more information and to register for these events, go to the Social Events page.

Free CAN-BIKE classes For TBN members

Andrew and Martin will be teaching the CAN-BIKE level 3/4 classes for TBN members, April 12-14. Do you want to boost your cycling skill level? Be a safer and more defensive rider on the road? Increase your confidence about riding on city streets? Whether you are a new or a long-term rider, there is always something to learn, some skills to improve, and, admit it, some bad habits to unlearn. Perhaps you are a TBN ride leader, but you are uncertain about what skills/behaviours to demonstrate and encourage as you lead your ride. CAN-BIKE provides structured classes to help you with all this and more! CAN-BIKE provides a Canada-wide skills curriculum as defined by Cycling Canada, and is recommended by provincial governments and many Canadian cities.

For information on this TBN educational offering, see PROGRAMS/EDUCATION/CAN-BIKE LEV 3 / LEV 4 EDUCATION or https://www.tbn.ca/CAN-BIKE-Classes

Joey Schwarz, Ken Lackman to new board positions

In the weeks following last November's TBN Board meeting, which included confirmation of the new Board of Directors starting this year, the Board confirmed the appointment of two members to new positions for the coming two-year term. Joey Schwarz is the new Communications director. Joey has been a TBN member for over a decade and is a super-experienced long-distance cyclist with a background in information technology, cycling education and advocacy. Ken Lackman is the new Social Events director. Ken has been in English language teaching for more than 25 years, including a role as social director for various trips and other activities. As an active member of TBN since 2010, he has done well over a hundred rides with Urban Rollers and, more recently, some Tourist rides.

New Tourist Ride coordinators for 2024

Many thanks to Danny Harvey, who is departing as Tourist Ride program coordinator this year. We wish him the best with his new-found time to explore the wide world beyond TBN. The program will be run this year by Frank Piazza, Terry Walsh and Sam Bootsma. TBN is grateful to them for stepping up as volunteers.

Members who are interested in participating in Tourist Rides this year, or trying out a ride, are asked to please complete this Survey. There is currently no closing date for this survey. However, we urge everyone to complete it as soon as possible as a closing date could be implemented in the coming weeks without warning

TBN names 2023 volunteers of the year

TBN has honoured three dedicated members as volunteers of the year, all pictured below. Catherine Whitfield did a lot of especially welcome work with the Tourist Ride program; Dave Middleton was a super volunteer in the Urban Roller program, leading numerous rides throughout the city; and Carl Condon has been a busy organizer with the Wednesday Wheelies team for several years. Each person received a gift card from TBN. We cannot express how pleased we are to recognize their volunteer work in the club.

RAGBRAI, July 20-27

TBN is hoping to organize a group to participate in RAGBRAI, an epic eight-day rolling festival of bicycles, music, food, camaraderie and community in Iowa, which was started in 1973 by two columnists at the Des Moines Register (hence the name). It is the oldest, largest and longest multi-day bicycle touring event in the world. For more info, check out ragbrai.com.  If you are interested in participating, please email weekendtrips@tbn.ca.

Zwift your way to winter fitness

TBN has renewed its winter program of virtual rides this year, using the Zwift computer platform to provide an almost limitless number of indoor rides as the weather turns cold, wet or snowy. We are currently scheduling morning rides on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. As well, we are hosting Tuesday and Thursday evening rides. If demand is sufficient, we will host weekend rides (we need some more volunteer virtual ride leaders). Check the TBN Calendar for scheduled rides.

Zwift allows us to offer curated rides in two fantasy worlds: Watopia and a Japanese-themed Makuri Islands, as well as virtual routes in London, France, Innsbruck, Yorkshire, Richmond, Scotland and a futuristic New York City. There are more than 100 different routes, from gentle to extremely strenuous. Many of our rides will use the "rubber band" feature in Zwift to keep all participants close together.

If you are interested in Zwift rides, either as a participant or as a volunteer virtual ride leader, please email virtualrides@tbn.ca with your preferences (day, time, distance and duration) and whether you are willing to host an event. Details about upcoming Zwift meetups will be posted on the TBN website. For more information about the meetups and how to get started, see https://tbn.ca/zwiftmeetups.

TBN has a Strava club

Now's the time to join TBN's Strava TBN club, where you can share your rides with fellow club members and see who's fastest on the hills. To join the club, click here and press "Request to join." Strava links to services like RideWithGPS and Garmin Connect and offers a way for to track your speed and mileage. It has two levels of membership, a fee-based premium service, and a no-charge basic service.

TBN routes: one of our most prized assets

You asked for a library of TBN routes. We listened. A new work-in-progress page offers a convenient way to find some of our routes, with links to rides mapped through RideWithGPS. We have over 1,000 routes in total, including many duplicates and obsolete routes, so this will become an easier way to find a specific ride than by backtracking to RideWithGPS in our online Calendar. Check it out.

IS YOUR TBN PROFILE OUT OF DATE?

Please ensure to periodically update your TBN club profile. Perhaps upload a photo of yourself (so other members know who you are), confirm that your email address listed is correct (as this is the primary way for us to contact you), confirm your phone and emergency contacts are still valid, and update your current (or former) occupation and let us know if and how you would like to volunteer with TBN. We are always looking for helping hands, especially those with needed skills. How to do this: Login to the website, click on your name, then click Edit Profile. When you are done, press Save to commit your changes.
